The Migration Research Cell (MRC) was established in May 2024 at the Department of Political Science, University of Peshawar, to inform policymaking, support humanitarian interventions and develop stakeholders’ networks related to migration through rigorous research on global, regional, and national trends in migration and the impacts of migration on societies, economies, and politics.
MRC conducts rigorous research on global, regional, and national migration trends and gains insights into how displacement affects societies, economies, and politics to inform policymaking and support humanitarian efforts.
MRC is a platform for academics and research institutes to promote scholarly exchange, collaborative research projects, capacity building, and organize conferences and seminars.
MRC links stakeholders involved in migration related interventions. These include government and non-government organizations, as well as formal and informal institutions.
We are situated in a strategic geographical location within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is crucial for understanding migration trends in Pakistan. It has been receiving and sending migrants for decades. It has hosted not only forced migrants, such as Afghan refugees, IDPs, and persons displaced by natural disasters, but also sent a significant number of labor migrants, both skilled and unskilled, to the Middle East, Europe, and other parts of the world. We are located at the most prominent and historic university in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and our department has approximately 500 students enrolled in various degree programs. Our location in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provides access to a diverse range of migrants and refugees, allowing us to understand migration dynamics thoroughly and to serve as a platform for various organizations working on migration to share their work and foster policy dialogue on these critical issues.
